First Week of School
My first week of college has definitely been one wild, exciting time. So far, the classes have not been that difficult, but they've been quite enjoyable. Right now, Honors English is probably my favorite. It focuses on "The Visual Society," so we will be watching movies, TV shows, and looking at other forms of visual arts in order to analyze them and get a full understanding of the meanings behind them. We've started off with Citizen Kane, and today we went through a few scenes examining the camera movements and staging of them. My physics and calculus classes are going to be essentially a rehash of things I learned last year, so they will not be too much of a problem. In Intro to Film and Video Studies, we started off the class with the viewing of Die Hard, a very enjoyable movie that showcased the basic elements of film quite well. Finally, there's the reason I came to OU, meteorology. I managed to find an excuse to go down to the new National Weather Center almost every day this week. Monday I had my Intro to Professional Meteorology class where we heard about the college and all the exciting programs in it. Tuesday I went down with a friend to check out the library and the observation deck, which is the prime spot on campus to watch thunderstorms roll in. Wednesday my mentoring group got a tour of the college from the school's director, Dr. Carr. He showed us around the college and the National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center offices. Thursday I went down there to do a photo op for Sooner Magazine with a few other students. When the magazine comes out I will try to put the pictures on here. Even though the building is not finished yet, it is one of the most dynamic spots on campus.Outside of class, I have been meeting a lot of new people from all over the place. My floor is composed of all National Merit Scholars, so we get along very well and have already bonded pretty closely. Interestingly, one of the guys across the hall from me is from Virginia Beach and lived in Little Neck. He even knew some of my old friends there. His roommate is also a meteorology major, so we have hung out together a lot. The college food has been quite tasty, especially the desserts. I was disappointed with their seafood offerings, but that's not exactly surprising for a place in the middle of the country. Getting around campus has been relatively easy. My bike takes me anywhere I need to go in a matter of minutes. Only bad thing is that by the time I get where I'm going, I end up being quite sweaty. The temperatures here should start cooling down more soon, so the long bike rides will not be so hard on me.
